「ハーンと猫(Hearn and a Cat)」と題し、アラン・ローゼン(Alan Rosen)氏による市民講座を開講いたします。受講申し込みは不要ですので、お気軽にお越しください。
ハーンは大の猫好きであり、生涯を通じて常に数匹の猫を飼っていました。本日の講演では、ハーンの私生活や著作において猫が果たした、驚くほど重要な役割についてご紹介します。
米国時代には猫にまつわる愉快な新聞記事やスケッチを執筆し、日本でも猫の行動を詳細に観察して、日本の猫に関するスケッチを2編発表しました。また、彼は日本の猫にまつわる民間伝承にも魅了されていました。
さらに、自身の幼少期の不遇な境遇を思い起こし、時には自分自身を猫―過酷な世界から守ってくれる母を持たない子猫―のように感じることさえありました。
生涯にわたる猫との関わりを通してハーンという人物を見つめることで、彼の真の姿をより深く理解することができるでしょう。
Hearn was a great cat lover and throughout his life almost always kept several cats as pets. Today’s talk will introduce you to the surprisingly important roles t hat cats played in Hearn’s personal life and in his writings.
In the US, he wrote amusing newspaper articles and sketches about cats, and in Japan closely observed their behavior and published two sketches about Japanese cats. He was also fascinated by Japan’s cat folk-lore.
Moreover, remembering his own childhood misfortunes, he sometimes felt like a cat himself, a kitten without a mother to protect him from a brutal world.
Looking at Hearn through his life-long relationship to cats gives us a deeper understanding of who he really was.
